A fake truth by web: google translate glitch

I make some basic mathematics learning materials. I publish them on YouTube. This time I got a strange comment. ``Why the title of this video is ``basic division''? It is about subtraction.'' I made this video in Japanese, my video title was in Japanese (基本のひき算), but the comment was in English. I was puzzled, ``ひき算'' means ``subtraction'' instead of ``division''. I found out that the person who wrote the comment used Google translate. When I input ``ひき算'' to the Google translate, it indeed translates it as ``Division''. Japanese has Kanji and Hiragana (and Katakana) for writing and Hiragana is a phonetic notation. My basic subtraction video is for first or second class students, thus I use Hiragana (phonetic notation). If I put the Kanji notation (引き算) to the Google translate, it is correctly translated to the subtraction. If I use all phonetic notation (ひきざん), then Google translate outputs ``Hikiman'', which I don...

Stopping is not enough

Earthquake in Kyusyu, Japan still continues. No one knows when it completely stops yet. I care the people there and I also afraid the nuclear reactors they are still running there. (Japan only has two running reactors now, both are in Kyusyu area where the earthquake continues. The number of earthquakes more than scale 1 is 770 times so far.) There are several petition to stop the reactors now. I also joined. But, technically stopping them are not enough. Most of Japanese facility only have water cooling pools for nuclear fuels. If such pool had a crack by an earthquake and lost the water, it is dangerous. How do they stably supply cooling water, the earthquake can be a cause of trouble. Just loosing the electricity of the pumps causes an accident. All the reactors in Fukushima stopped when the earthquake came, but they could not maintain to cool the fuels. That we saw five years ago. To avoid an accident, we need to think about after stopping the reactors. I agree, let's first...

Birthday Donation

My birthday party of this year was delayed. A birthday present is common here for a birthday party. But I have all tangible things I want, except one. Yet, I want to have several non-tangible things. However, they are either impossible for a birthday presents or meaningless. For example, I would like to have world peace, a world class free education system in many languages, I want to understand some mathematical concepts, I would like to be fluent of German, I would like to have more time for my volunteer activities, and so on. Thus, I asked some donation as a birthday present. I first show a list of organization I would like to donate. Then the people who join the party donate. I match the same amount from my pocket money to double the donation. This year was the second time. I think it went well. When I got a receipt from the organization, I will show it to the party participants. My cynical friends have already joke on them when they saw the paper, "it is just a paper and ...

Super Tuesday

I am visiting US. Coincidentally, there was the super Tuesday. Some news  show Trump's domination. His motto is ``Make america great again''. However, his definition of word `great' is quite different from I know. He wants to build a wall on southern border and Mexico should pay it. He doesn't believe climate change. He wants to remove the public health care. He wants to bomb ISIS. He wants to restore the death penalty. (See http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/us/elections/donald-trump-on-the-issues.html ) Currently, he is winning. I have a problem to understand of his definition of 'great'. If there is a problem inside a country, then the reason is outside (e.g., Mexico wall). If there is a problem, he just doesn't believe that (e.g., climate change), and so on. If he won, I am afraid what he would do. I can easily imagine it is a war to one of (or some of) ISIS, Russia, China, Mexico, some of Islamic countries, .... I am also afraid who actually ...

How can we make the quality of social media's article higher?

It's been long time since I left a social media. The reason was I could not use my time well on the social media. I think there could be a good way to use my time on it. Today, I watch the following TED talk, and think about other aspect of the social media. Wael Ghonim: Let's design social media that drives real change http://www.ted.com/talks/wael_ghonim_let_s_design_social_media_that_drives_real_change I also felt ``polarization of people'' when I used the social media. People gathered on a theme/page. Most of the people already like. interested in, or know the subject. They are not completely stranger. If people feel this page is not exactly they ware looking for, they would just leave the page. In the end, I am more interested in a talk with friends at a cafe. Usually I and my friends have some different opinions and I could found something new. Even we found a different opinions, we usually continue to talk and both try to know and understand the difference. B...

Never too late to learn computer: What does it mean 8GB on my USB stick?

Introduction I recently help some people who said ``I don't understand how to use my computer, but I want to do something.'' I found these people have interesting questions. So I write them that story here. What does it mean 8GB on my USB stick? Some of my friends work on a social movement. They want to study something, they want to tell something to people and they want to discuss about it with others. For example, what is nationality of children when a couple married internationally? Are there any rights differing with others? They want to study these questions themselves. Usually it is deeply connected to their life. Here is a woman, who researched on a certain subject. She got a video materials and she wanted to share it with others. ``I don't know how to do that, but I want to show these materials to some people.'' This time I have a chance to help her. What she wanted was to show this video to around 30 people by a video projector. She told me a co...

70 years later

July 25th, 2015, we gathered in front of the building, that Harry S. Truman ordered to use atomic bombs. We made lanterns with praying we never use the atomic bombs again for killing. I feel praying only cannot solve anything. But I start praying and I would like to tell others there are some people who pray that. Making lanterns Put lanterns on the lake Lanterns

The meaning of ``Get together'': Part 3

I like to make a quiz like in the last article. But some of my friends said to me ``Many can live without knowing such things.'' That would be true. I even thought that it is natural that many people don't care about that. But recently I found some people deceive others by using this kind of wrong math. I feel sad when the honest people were deceived. Especially when I read a newspaper article that someone used this kind of wrong logic and stole some money from people. I think it may be good to know these kind of things not to be deceived by malicious people. The problem here is actually not exactly a mathematical problem, it is rather a language problem. If you understand the meaning of the problem, actually this is not so much math in there. Since the question is described in a language (originally in Japanese, here in English. I found it is interesting this worked for both languages), we need to understand what the problem means. Here we need to know what is the ...

The meaning of ``Get together'': Part 2

A while ago, I taught mathematics to a thirteen years old boy. His family moved to another city, so we could not have more sessions, but I liked to teach him. In the last session, we discussed about addition of fractions. If we get a half cake (\(\frac{1}{2}\)) and a half cake (\(\frac{1}{2}\)) together, \begin{eqnarray*}  \frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{2} = \frac{1+1}{2} = \frac{2}{2} = 1, \end{eqnarray*} it becomes 1. If we add fractions with like denominators, we only add numerators. We discussed why we did in this way and what this meant. Then I told him a story. The boy's favorite soccer player tried to shoot the goal twice in a game, and he succeeded once. His goal ratio of this game is \(\frac{1}{2}\). (Two shoots, one goal) The next game, again he tried to shoot the goal twice in the game, and again he succeeded once. His goal ratio of the game is again \(\frac{1}{2}\). Let's think about his goal ratio to get two games together. For these two games, he tried four goal...

The meaning of ``Get together'': Part 1

Every person thinks by words. Thus words are important for me, too. Especially I need to write programs to realize an idea through the words. We can easily find that one word has sometimes a few meanings. People make a joke from it. I think one word has a few meaning is quite natural. For instance, ``run'' has a few meaning. I run as I move fast by foot. I can run a shop. A movie is now running at the theater. In English, it has more meanings with a short word (run after, run away, run out, ...), however, you have already seen the ``run'' itself has a few meanings. When we used only one language, we hardly noticed this multiple meaning of a word. However, when we learn foreign languages, we need to notice this through the translation. We can easily see one word usually has more than one translation in a dictionary. When we learn a foreign language, we can usually see the deepness of both our own language and the foreign language. In literature, especially in poems, us...

A solution of a kernel panic Debian 7.6 + NVidia GTX 770 at the boot time.

One of my friend had a problem with Debian 7.6 + NVidia GTX 770. When he booted the machine with the graphics card, the kernel panics at very early stage of the boot. The reason is that the nouveau driver seems not supported this GPU. So the solution is black listing the nouveau driver. If you install the NVIDIA driver, /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-blacklists-nouveau.conf does the job. Therefore, before installing the card (hardware), installing the NVIDIA driver is a solution.

An energy company uses exponential power.

Question  In Rabbit city, Mr Fox generates electricity energy. One day, Mr Fox realized there is no one else generates the energy. So he decided  raise the price every year for 30 years since that year he retire. He met his uncle, who is working for the city hall. Mr Fox said his uncle, ``I would like to raise the price 10 Euro for currently 100 Euro paying rabbit.'' His uncle answered, ``It seems you don't know about economy. You should say, I will raise 10 % every year.'' Which statement of following is correct? Mark all apply. It's same raise when you start 100 Euro and 10 Euro every year and when you start 100 Euro and 10% raise every year. Since 10% of 100 Euro is 10 Euro. Therefore, 30 years later, how much raise the price is 10 * 30 = 300, and plus original price 100 = 400. It becomes 400 Euro after 30 years. Mr. Fox's uncle is correct. 30 years later, 10% every year raise is twice as much as 10 Euro each year's raise. The raised cost is a...

Ich suhe einen Mann, der mich am 5.9 um 0:40 Uhr ...

A strange man is sitting at a S-bahn station. Sehe sundayresearch.eu ".  My translation is "I am looking for a man who (physically) attacked me on Sept. 5th at 0:40 at Ku'damm and then ran away. He said, he hates all foreigner, Chinese, and Japanese. If he will really save the Germany (and the world), I can offer a job for him. But only the short time. See sundayresearch.eu ." A man with eyepatch. His odd note.

Myron Krueger's Amazing demo in 1988.

Myron Krueger's Amazing demo in 1988. This video below is Myron Krueger's 1988's demo. It is one of the origin of virtual reality and the interactive art. It includes 'zoom in' gesture by two fingers and moving around a figure by hand or finger gesture. It is common in these days on a smart phone and a tablet. (see around 4:30). http://youtu.be/dmmxVA5xhuo?t=4m30s But I have a bit strange side story. last year (2012), Apple win Samsung in lawsuit and get 1 billion dollars. One of the Apple's inventions is this zoom in effect by fingers. http://www.ndtv.com/article/world/samsung-apple-lawsuit-penalty-of-1-billion-dollar-slashed-in-half-337277 Apple invented this ``technology'' in 2005 as I read. More strangely, someone invented this technology in 1993, and he won the lawsuit against Apple. http://easthamptonstar.com/News/2013829/Springs%E2%80%99-Own-Beats-Apple Myron Krueger's demo is magnificent in many ways. The demo itself is great...
I just found that some reason, Google translate doesn't like number 8 and prefer 6.

Election of the House of Councilors

Today I visited the Japanese embassy to vote the Saninsen (House of Councilors). It seems LDP will hugely win. The focus is not over half, but 2/3 of the parliament. After the vote, they will restart more than 8 atom reactors. This time I felt the sign of perish of Japan. It is not about atom reactors, the mentality of the country. Once Japanese faced to a disaster, people cooperated, they invented a new technology, rebuild the city, even a better one. Disasters were hard challenges, but Japanese eventually handle each of them and use them to develop themselves to the next level. Sometimes Japanese made an opportunity from a disaster. This time they even have not been able to rebuild the city in Fukushima, have no concrete plan for the new energy.  Even I hypothesize myself to use atomic reactors, the plutonium thermal use plan has been so delayed, no breeder reactor technology yet, no sign of practical fusion reactor technology, there is no future of light water reactor. Now we...

Why does he need to run.

Edward Snowden is on the run. I wondered why? Because the president admitted his saying was correct. Why does he need to run? The following is my thought simulation. You might find disturbing since in my simulation you don't find human factor. So I usually don't show it. But my motivation is I don't want to see him to be harmed. ``There is no worth to kill him.'' I thought. If someone or some organization kills him, what kind of effect is expected. I found two types of organizations which can see the value to kill him. One is the government, to avoid the domino effect. This government doesn't want to see other employee follows him. But this is obvious, if the government killed him, the world blame the government. The other is the organization that against the government. People suspect the first motivation. If someone against the government, the one kills him, and claims ``The government did it. You see that the government is evil.'' Now his...

I believe that the education is only the possible solution to make the world better. Would you like to join me? (In English)

This is a English translation of the last post. Hi onigiri people, How are you? Not seen for a long time. I am still thinking about how I can help the Tsunami victims in  Tohoku. Although for most of the people, this is an old story. If so, you can skip the rest of my letter. You might have found a new challenging mission. If you still care, Welcome. I finally got an idea. I read an article about Tsunami victim children who have a problem to catch up the class in their school. I cannot stop thinking how can I help them. I believe that the education is only the hope to solve real long term problems. But how can I help? A few months ago, I found the people who have the similar idea and they have implemented the system to help. It's free, but they need voluntary help. It's called Kahn academy: "Khan Academy is an organization on a mission. We're a not-for-profit with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education for...
